It's Not 50/50

Marriage is never a clear 50/50 split. We fully experienced this in 2021 after Monica was in a car accident and was unable to do even the simplest of tasks...like blow drying her hair. And relying on her husband who has no hair. The age-old belief of a 50/50 split in marriage suggests an equal, transactional partnership. But this view oversimplifies the complexities of relationships. At Married A.F., we challenge this concept and advocate for a more nuanced understanding of marital balance. The 50/50 idea suggests that each marital action has an equal and opposite reaction. But marriage isn't transactional—it's a dynamic dance adapting to changing tunes. Marriage isn't perpetually 50/50. At times, it's 70/30 or even 90/10, especially when one partner faces challenges, whether health, work, or personal issues. A successful marriage acknowledges these shifts, rooted in respect, love, and commitment. Flexibility is key. An inflexible 50/50 viewpoint can be restrictive. Real strength lies in adapting, often giving more than receiving. For instance, expecting a partner with a long-term illness to always contribute 50% is unrealistic and lacks empathy. Recognize that every individual brings unique strengths. Perhaps one excels in finance and the other in domestic tasks. Rather than sticking to percentages, focus on harmoniously merging these strengths. Clear communication ensures this fluid approach doesn't cultivate inequality or bitterness. Regular dialogues about expectations and feelings are paramount. Flexibility shouldn't translate to one partner perpetually shouldering more without reciprocity. In essence, move beyond the 50/50 narrative. Marriage is a fluctuating balance, about supporting each other during life's unpredictability. It's not merely about splitting tasks but journeying together through life's ups and downs. Join us at Married A.F. for more honest conversations on marriage. Because, beyond the math, true love is about unity, commitment, and shared life journeys.
